Friends of Israel Initiative launched at US Congress as resolution is introduced in the House
The Friends of Israel Initiative continued its international launch program with a breakfast for Senators and Representatives at the United States Congress in Washington D.C. on Wednesday.
The previous evening a resolution supporting the Initiative was introduced in the House of Representatives.
The breakfast was hosted by Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) and Rep. Albio Sires (D-NJ), the original sponsors of the resolution. The bi-partisan group was also joined by Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT).
Former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo, and Ambassador John Bolton thanked the assembled members of Congress for their support and along with other attending members of the Friends of Israel Initiative board -- Andrew Roberts, Roberto Agostinelli and Carlos Bustelo -- were each handed a blue, leather bound copy of the Congressional resolution.
Mr. Aznar also took the opportunity to announce that former Czech President and one time dissident playwright Vaclav Havel had become the latest world figure to join up with the Initiative.
The resolution itself is H.Con Res. 315 "Recognizing the formation and supporting the objectives of the Friends of Israel Initiative." It calls on Congress to recognize the formation of the Initiative, to affirm its goals as laid down in its mission statement as well as reaffirming Congress’s "enduring bipartisan support" for the US-Israeli relationship and for Israel’s right to exist as a secure and democratic Jewish state.
